A socially potent insula appears at the meeting point of urbanistically fragmented heterogenous family houses and somewhat more consolidated multiple-apartment buildings. This large block bound by four streets contains facilities essential for a community: a church as a spiritual component, a school as humanistic (enlightening) component and sport grounds as a physical component. It is the physical component which is to become the new generator within the community in form of the Sports and Recreation Center Brda. In addition to becoming an architectural landmark of northern Split, SRC Brda delivers to the community contemporary spaces and programs it was lacking and are key to human growth and development in the 21st century.
The Brda neighborhood also lacks a central square in the classical sense. The new sports center has the potential of providing one. Given spatial characteristic position the sports center along the eastern perimeter of the land plot which opens free space – a square – facing west to Put Brda street and aligned with the new pedestrian walkway along the building’s south side. The existing church and the elementary school form same relationships with the road to the west and their respective access squares, together with the new sports square now make up a vibrant pedestrian zone. From the small church square, across the elongated school square to the largest, central square which, with its distinctive design, the new western façade of the sports hall as a backdrop and the grand lantern of the hall complex, make up a new city landmark of metropolitan scale.
SRC Brda is conceived as a spatial machine of contrasting spaces. Open versus closed, lightweight versus heavy, light versus darkness, steel versus concrete are some of the contrasts the new building deals with. The spatial protagonists are the swimming pool and the sports hall. Due to the requested larger number of parking spaces and the complexity and high cost of stacked structure, the main volumes are shifted to be structurally independent thus creating garage space.
